When Sony unveils its new PlayStation device this week, it will be far cheaper than many experts had expected — a price tag that, it is hoped, will lure millions of customers into buying its latest video games console.
Industry sources and leaked internal documents suggest that Sony is considering pricing the new device at about £300, more than £100 cheaper than the starting cost of its predecessor, the PlayStation 3.
The Japanese electronics giant will unveil its latest console, expected to be called PlayStation 4 or “Orbis”, the codename for the machine at its Tokyo headquarters, at a special event in New York on Wednesday.
The device is expected to contain a number of new features, such as a controller with a touchscreen, the ability to play “streamed” games over the internet and compatibility with the new generation of ultra-high definition televisions. However, because company executives want to see Microsoft’s updated Xbox before PS4’s release, Sony is unlikely to reveal exact prices or dates for the new PlayStation at next week’s event.
Sony hopes to launch the new PlayStation worldwide at the same time. Industry sources said the company does not want “to be on the back foot” as they were with the release of the PlayStation 3, which launched in Europe later than in the US and Japan, meaning many gamers were left with no other choice than to buy the Xbox.
The company is also expected to price the device at close to £300, believing that the PlayStation 3’s original price of £425 made it unattractive to anyone other than the keenest of games fans.
The PlayStation 3 has sold more than 72 million units worldwide, according to vgchartz.com, a site that collects figures on video games. But the machine has been outsold by cheaper alternatives such as Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii.
But some analysts said that even £300 would be too high a price for many consumers. “The market is moving is large numbers in a low cost, softer entertainment experience,” said James McQuivey, an analyst at Forrester research. “If Sony try to go for a hard core gaming base, they will plant their flag out there with few troops to rally around them.”
Last week, new reports suggested what Microsoft is planning with its upcoming console, dubbed by commentators as the “Xbox 720”. They suggested the machine will be able run multiple games at the same time and will only work when its Kinect motion sensor system is plugged in.
Sony’s new PlayStation is expected to feature powerful processors and enhanced graphics. The new console is also expected to be compatible with new “Ultra HD” or “4K” televisions — flatscreens that are four times clearer than today’s high-definition TVs.
Sony were among a number of companies to show off new Ultra HD televisions at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last month, and would like the PlayStation to take advantage of the new technology. |
