Evolve’s Arena Mode: A Domed DeathMatch
Forget stalking your prey. Forget the sneaky cat-and-mouse creeping around on planet Shear. If you just want to get your claws dirty from the get-go, you’re gonna love Evolve’s newest free update: Arena Mode. It is a life-or-death cage match coming today, May 26, to all platforms.
How Arena Mode works
The short version: The Monster and the Hunter squad all get dropped into a dome. No escape, no excuses – this ain’t over until someone goes down!
• The new Arena Mode places five fixed domes on each of the 14 maps in Evolve. For those not up on your math, that’s 70 locked-down venues, ready for brawling.
• At the start, you select a map, then you’re in for a best-of-three series of hardcore firefights. The Monster and Hunters are locked in that dome until one side is eliminated. After that match, you immediately jump to another dome on the same map for round two – that continues until there’s a victor.
• All the Hunters and Monster begin each match with one perk.
• Monsters start at Stage 2 with 50 percent armor, but can feed on wildlife in battle to regain armor and even evolve to Stage 3. (Though the size of the mobile arena makes this a tough task.)
• The dome isn’t coming down. So, for all you Trappers out there, your job got a little easier.
• There is no dropship timer. Once a Hunter dies in battle, they have to sit it out until the next fight.
• Players can’t change their character or perk selection between rounds, but Monster players can change their abilities.
Obviously, if you’re looking to get competitive with Evolve, something like an Arena Mode is going to be awesome to play – or watch. That’s just a taste of things to come.
2K Announces New Monster and Hunters Coming to Evolve
2K and Turtle Rock Studios announced today that one new Monster and four new Hunters are coming to Evolve, the 4v1 shooter in which four Hunters cooperatively fight to take down a single-player controlled Monster. Offered individually, or as part of Hunting Season 2*, all five new characters will be made available prior to the end of Take-Two Interactive, Inc.’s fiscal year on March 31, 2016. The first new character, Lennox (Assault class), will be available on June 23, 2015.
Evolve Hunting Season 2 will be available for purchase on June 23, 2015 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 computer entertainment system, and Windows PC. Those who purchase the new Monster and Hunters as part of Hunting Season 2 will also receive an additional exclusive skin with the launch of each of the five new included playable characters.
Coming to Evolve later this month, Lennox (Assault class) is the first Hunter in Evolve to feature a melee attack. Her ‘Thunderchild’ mechanized suit is equipped with a Plasma Lance that deals massive amounts of damage in close combat, while her Autocannon and Thunder Strike attack allow Lennox to fight when outside of melee range.
“The new Monster and Hunters coming to Evolve in Hunting Season 2 are some of the most unique characters our team has created,” said Chris Ashton, co-founder and design director at Turtle Rock Studios. “Each of these characters introduces combat mechanics that are brand new to the Evolve gameplay experience.”
More new content is available in Evolve starting today, including a new Hunter, a new free map for Arena Mode matches, and Hunt 2.0, which introduces significant improvements to the matchmaking, user experience, and revamped leaderboards while playing Hunt mode.
Evolve’s newest Hunter, Jack (Trapper), joins the team with an all-new set of abilities and weapons. Jack, who refers to himself as The Jackal, scrounged the industrial ruins to build his trapper arsenal. To pack a punch, Jack dual wields a pair of pistols, enabling him to reload one pair while firing the other. To track and trap the Monster, Jack uses a hacked Survey Satellite to locate enemies and his Repulsor gloves to stop the Monster in its tracks.
A new map provides a fresh take on Arena Mode, free of charge. Murder Pits is a giant pit-fighting stadium designed exclusively for Arena Mode. Each arena on the map presents a different, unique challenge:
• ‘Jail’ houses dangerous wildlife, freed by doors that open randomly;
• ‘Outhouse’ is a straightforward arena encouraging control of the high ground;
• ‘Quarry’ carves out a tall, narrow environment stacked with rooms;
• ‘Saloon’ features a series of rooms surrounding a deadly Tyrant pool;
• ‘Slaughter House’ contains two chambers separated by a wall that can only be opened by the Monster.
We’re excited to introduce Hunt 2.0, which includes significant improvements to the matchmaking, user experience, and revamped leaderboards while playing Hunt mode. This mode was built in part on desires expressed by the Community. Specific new features introduced in Hunt 2.0 include:
• You can now play exclusively as Monster or Hunter;
• You will never join a match in progress;
• Improved matchmaking that incorporates skill level;
• Revamped leaderboards that divide players among five divisions, with tiered rankings within each division;
Improvements to Observer Mode
You’re going to want to capture all those incredible gameplay moments with this new update. As such, after reading all the feedback we’ve received, we’ve made some major improvements to Observer Mode. This mode now includes information such as when Trapper has Domed the Monster and a minimal mode for an improved viewing experience. Core Gameplay Balance Improvements
This is one of the biggest balance patches Evolve has ever had. Like many other features this update, we’ve worked hard to address feedback and develop creative new ways to enhance gameplay in Evolve. This update, the meta is Evolving (pun intented).
• One of Evolve’s biggest balance patches with changes to Monster abilities and Hunter jetpacks.
• Improved, fast-deploying domes!
• Major changes to some of the Community favorites such as Bucket and Torvald coupled with an improved Behemoth.
• These changes to the core gameplay will give both Hunters and Monsters a whole new (and more balanced) world to hunt in.
