I think that they are both acceptable. And maybe you can try to add “please” before the sentence.

发现我也许误会了。
an English major： 一个英语专业的学生
  major是名词，不用再加student！！

可是我有疑问，英语专业的学生不一定是要英文系的对吧？
所以一个使用英语为主要媒介语的学生也可以算是English major不是吗？？
这样的话我的理解也不能说是完全错误的吧？？

major 的意思就是主修
中国人就是说专业； 我的专业是经济
