Two years ago we revealed that we were making a new Mirror’s Edge™. Last year, we gave you a behind the scenes look into some of the early progress we had made. And though we haven't said much else in all that time, we have been listening. Thank you for your incredible passion and your patience. I'm excited to tell you that it's paid off — by this time next week, you will have finally seen more of the game at E3.
Mirror’s Edge has always had a special place in the hearts of all of us at DICE. The first game had a lot of promise. It was unlike anything else in terms of the gameplay and style — it had a unique soul. But as much as we loved that game, we knew it could be more. So that’s what we have set out to do as we introduce Mirror’s Edge to a new generation.
The team has spent a lot of time re-evaluating every aspect of the game and making it a new experience. This is not a sequel, this is not Mirror's Edge 2. We have landed on a vision that honors the first game — pushing the boundaries of first person movement and diving deeper into the story behind our heroine Faith — but also brings a lot of great new, interesting gameplay and features to the experience for our players.
So on behalf on the entire team here at DICE, we can’t wait to show you what we have been pouring our heart and soul into. We can’t wait to introduce you to Mirror’s Edge™ Catalyst.

Mirror’s Edge Catalyst is Coming February 23, 2016
DICE, an Electronic Arts studio, today announced that Mirror’s Edge Catalyst will be available February 23, 2016 in North America and starting February 25, 2016 in Europe. Mirror’s Edge Catalyst immerses players in the origin story of Faith, and her rise from a careless young woman to a heroine who opens the eyes of an entire city. Featuring fluid movement and combat in a massive city where you can run free and explore, Mirror’s Edge Catalyst adds a new level of immersion to action adventure games by putting you in the first person perspective. You are not just watching Faith’s fight for freedom, you will experience it through her eyes. “When we set out to bring Mirror’s Edge to a new generation of gamers, we knew we wanted to deliver on the potential of the first game – building an iconic heroine in Faith, bringing a beautiful, stylized world to life, and delivering fluid first person action,” says Sara Jansson, Senior Producer at DICE. “In Mirror’s Edge Catalyst, you will get to feel what it’s like to glide across the skyline of the city. You will get to know what it feels like to be a projectile who plows through your opponents. And you will get to experience Faith’s story.”
In Mirror’s Edge Catalyst, you will experience the rise of Faith, a daring Runner who uncovers a hidden truth within the walls of the city of Glass. Through her journey, Faith will explore every corner of the city, from the highest, most pristine skyscrapers, to the dark and gritty tunnels that lie beneath. Players will need to master the environment, using their momentum and timing their combat to fight the oppression of the ruling elite, uncovering the dark secrets behind the city’s beautiful façade. Mirror’s Edge Catalyst gives players the freedom to explore the entire city, discovering a variety of new activities, like ‘Dash’, races from point A to B, environmental puzzles and story missions to complete at their own pace.
For players that want to show off their perfect technique or how well they’ve mastered the city can pre-order Mirror’s Edge Catalyst to receive the Combat Runner Kit or Speed Runner Kit*, respectively. The Combat Runner Kit includes unique in-game items including a combat-themed Projection Shader, changing how a player appears in their friend’s game world, a Runner Tag to stand out in the leaderboards, and a unique background to customize a player’s Screen Hacks. The Speed Runner Kit also comes equipped with a Projection Shader, Runner Tag and unique Screen Hack background, but the features are more themed to the speed of their skill.
Mirror’s Edge Catalyst will be available at retail and for digital download on Xbox One, the all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation 4 computer entertainment system and Origin for PC. Discussing the simple yet nuanced control scheme of Mirror’s Edge™ Catalyst, Lead Gameplay Designer Rickard Antroia sums it up well: intuition is key. We’ve already touched upon the fluidity of movement in Mirror’s Edge Catalyst, and how your mind, hands, and controller will work in unison as you guide Faith through the City of Glass. But what does that entail exactly?
In a series of posts, we’ll deep-dive into the entire spectrum of movement in Mirror’s Edge Catalyst. Anything from basics such as a simple jump to advanced chains of wall runs, coils, and quickturns for expert Runners will be covered.
Let’s jump into the basics. With the help of Rickard Antroia, you’ll be guided through the move set of Faith and how this is both familiar and intuitive, as well as improved and new.
“Moving forward and using what we call Up and Down Actions are the fundamentals of movement in Mirror’s Edge Catalyst. Fans of the first game will be familiar in how this is handled. Since there isn’t a dedicated jump button the left shoulder buttons (or PC equivalent) will be used instead, signaling an intent from the player,” Antroia explains.
Sometimes this contextual intent is a jump. If you’re running and reach a ledge, your instinct is to jump and that’s precisely what the Up Action button will do. Pressing it when running next to a wall will trigger a wall run, and if you’re facing a wall that needs to be climbed Faith will heave herself up with the same technique.
Located at the right trigger, a brand new control function can be found that will make both movement and combat even more fluid and powerful: Shift.
“The origin of Shift is that we wanted to find something that lets you gain speed faster. Shift lets you move sideways in any direction, and also backwards. Say you get too close to a threat or just want to back up and get a clearer view of your surroundings, Shift will take care of that,“ Antroia says.
Shift can also be used to “drift” when taking corners. Though running and driving are very different activities, this is not entirely dissimilar from techniques in racing games. If you’re running and are approaching a 90-degree turn, you can turn slightly towards the turn and activate a Sideshift to make a sharper turn.
“One extra perk of using Shift like this is that you can’t fall off of ledges while doing it. This means you can use this technique on dodgy terrain and on small catwalks without railings,” says Rickard Antroia.
DICE’s ambition is to cater for both beginners as well as experienced Runners in MEC. Apart from more practical things like ways to customize your key bindings, the move set contains both newbie and pro approaches. Take Quickturn for instance:
“If a beginner is in the middle of a wall run and wants to jump to the opposite side, the Quickturn button will do this with a set direction. More advanced players can however use the mouse or analogue stick to adjust the exact direction of that jump,” Antroia says.
To sum up, the move set of Faith in Mirror’s Edge Catalyst is a textbook example of something you’ll learn fast but can spend months on perfecting. There are many other aspects of movement in Mirror’s Edge Catalyst so stay tuned for more deep-dives on speed, combat moves, and elite tips on mastering Faith.
Years ago, we set out an ambitious vision for Mirror’s Edge Catalyst. Achieving that vision and delivering the best possible experience is equally inspiring and challenging. And it takes time. We set out to create a vast city to explore, full of stunning vistas, majestic skyscrapers, and mysterious tunnels. We’re building the most immersive action-adventure game with fluid movement and combat in first person. Mirror’s Edge Catalyst will be an all-new playground with a deeper and more engaging story - and we want to accomplish all these goals to the highest quality possible.
So we’ve made the decision to bring Mirror’s Edge to the world starting May 24, 2016. We will use these few extra months to make sure that when you step into the massive City of Glass and experience the rise of Faith, it’s as entertaining, impressive, and memorable as it can be.
Mirror’s Edge Catalyst has received an incredible response from fans around the world over the past months. You’ve been eager to see the return of Faith and the unique style and gameplay that only Mirror’s Edge can create. Witnessing your positive reactions has been amazing motivation for me and the rest of our passionate team at DICE.
Thank you again for your patience and support. Keep the Faith.

Mirror’s Edge Catalyst Gameplay Information
Momentum
Build momentum to reach top speed and do daring jumps between rooftops or stylish slides through tight spaces. Use the new Shift move and get a short burst of acceleration in any direction. For a quick change of plan, use Quickturn for a rapid 180 or 90 degree turn.
Traversal
Hit top speed quickly zipping down wire lines. Carefully balance on a ledge and transition smoothly to hanging from it. Run vertically and horizontally on any wall and use pipes to swing over gaps or around corners.
Gadgets
Faith needs little less than her running skills, martial arts knowledge, and determination to fight the oppression smothering the citizens of Glass. But a few pieces of hi-tech hardware will help her to traverse the city.
Mag Rope and Disruptor
• Mag Rope – Latches on to specific points in the world, allowing for unique traversal and interaction opportunities.
• Disruptor – This upgrade of the tech in Faith’s glove lets you disrupt and destroy KrugerSec and AI systems.
Combat
You don’t need a gun. Use your environment, your momentum, and your physicality to fight oppression.
Attack Types
String together Faith’s fluid attacks when engaging with KrugerSEC or other enemies. Combine light and heavy punches to force enemies off balance or to gain an advantage when they’re stunned. Use your environment when fighting to build Focus, and dish out Swift attacks to fight without losing momentum.
Flow and Focus
Build up and maintain Focus by maintaining movement and action. When Faith has Focus enemies can’t hit her, but losing Focus makes enemy attacks a greater threat to your health level. Once Faith focuses completely, she enters into Flow, a state of awareness that allows you to attack in new and more powerful ways.
