Ubisoft announces climbing adventure Grow Home for PC

Ubisoft Announces Experiental Vertical Adventure Game Grow Home

Today, Ubisoft announced Grow Home, a quirky, experiential climbing game in development at Reflections, a Ubisoft studio based in Newcastle, UK. Grow Home will be available for download via Steam for Windows PC on February 4, 2015.

In Grow Home, players are free to explore the strange, open world full of floating islands, majestic caves and waterfalls, all set in a beautiful and minimalist artistic style. Players take on the role of BUD (Botanical Utility Droid), an excitable, child-like robot sent on a mission to search the galaxy for a new species of plant that can oxygenate his home world. By growing and directing the giant Star Plant into a towering organic sculpture, players will reshape the planet and create a magnificent landscape that lets them climb to new heights. The game’s unique climbing controls and abilities challenge players to continually reach for higher ground, but one wrong move and it’s a long way down.

“Whether it’s BUD’s charming, procedurally-generated animation, the awesome structure of the Star Plant players create or the beautiful landscapes, there is a peaceful, innocent vibe about Grow Home that makes the game utterly unique,” says Pete Young, producer, Reflections, a Ubisoft studio.

Started as an experiment within the Reflections studio by a small team of eight talented developers, Grow Home offers the opportunity to discover a singular open-world based on two main pillars: Climbing and Exploration.

Climbing: The world of Grow Home is built for vertical exploration and the unique climbing mechanic brings unprecedented freedom. Players control BUD’s hands independently to grab onto any surface, scaling the giant Star Plant as it grows and expands.

Exploration: There are no set paths in Grow Home. Players are free to explore the many micro islands and hidden caves in this fun and beautiful open world. Every island encountered is scattered with hidden crystals to power the players’ journey and expand their abilities.

Rumor: Ubisoft showed Unity, Victory, AC VII locations back in 2013, Japan next?

Mind blown! Ubisoft gave us Unity, Victory and AC VII locations back in 2013!!

First of all, I’ll start by saying this is not some crazy conspiracy theory that I made up, but speculation based on true facts, as you’re about to see. If I am correct, Ubisoft gave us the key to figure out the next 3 AC locations back in 2013, when Black Flag was released. If this information has already been uncovered, please excuse me because I had no idea. For now, let me explain.

Last November, I bought Assassin's Creed Unity: The Complete Official Guide from Piggyback, as I do every year (I have all the guides and art books, they are awesome). I read the whole thing, enjoyed the artwork and all the info, and that was it. But a couple of days ago, as I was checking some facts again, a particular piece of artwork caught my attention like it didn’t before. For a moment I had a weird feeling. I looked a it again, this time in detail. I couldn’t believe my eyes, I thought it couldn’t be real. But no, It was there and was VERY real.

So I go back to Black Flag’s official guide from last year, and oh my God! There it was, near the end. And I check The Art of Assassin’s Creed IV: Blag Flag, and again, it was there in full page, in all its glory, with none of us suspecting anything! Hell, you can even find it in the Abstergo Entertainment: Employee Handbook (that I also own). Right in front of us the whole time, but no one though anything of it (not even me). So what does it show? Keep reading.

The piece I’m talking about, drawn by Ubisoft artist Martin Deschambault, shows one possible Abstergo Entertainment lobby area for the present day part, different from the one seen in the final game. It’s gorgeous. There are some Abstergo employees walking around, a fountain and one information desk, but the really interesting part is the huge flat screen that is behind the desk. This screen shows several historical places and landmarks from all over the world (6, to be exact). Some are clear references from previous games, but others… refer to future locations. Let’s take a look.

The first one is very small and not very clear. It looks like the front of a church. I’d like to think it’s a reference to the very first Assassins Creed, but it’s hard to say:

No doubt in the second one. It shows Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence, a clear reference to Assassins Creed II and the Ezio saga:

The next one shows a tropical island, which can only refer to AC IV Black Flag:

And now is when things get really interesting. You should recognize the fourth one, which is… that right, Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris! Way before Unity was leaked by Kotaku.

But wait there’s more. The next one shows… The Houses of Parliament and Big Ben in London!! Like in Victory, as you already know thanks to Kotaku’s leak. Yeah!

In the last one, the screen shows another location which has not been touch in any AC yet, and which (considering all the above) should be AC VII location. Where are we going? It’s Japan!! Which makes sense, considering people have been asking for it for a long time. The image clearly shows a Japanese temple surrounded by houses. I’m not sure, but I’d say it’s Sensoji Temple, Tokyo's oldest temple and one of its most significant.

Grow Home Now Available on Steam, Launch Trailer

Grow Home is Now Available!

From a seed of an idea to innovative new game, Grow Home is now available for download. As BUD (Botanical Utility Droid) you will grab, pull, jump and climb your way to the stars. Explore the strange open world and propel yourself to new heights, discovering strange floating islands as you make your way to your ship. Grow the massive Star Plant so you can reach your ship and bring this new plant species back to your home planet. Download Grow Home now on Steam for $7.99.

Grab a gamepad and use the trigger buttons to control both of BUD’s arms separately as you climb your way through the sky on the Star Plant. Climb onto the branching Star Shoots and control their growth to create a new path toward one of the many floating islands. Make sure to watch your grip on the plant; it’s a long way down. Luckily for you, you’ve got a handy flower parachute to help you soften your fall. You’ll also be able to access teleportation pads to make your journey a bit easier.

Grow Home comes from a team of eight people within Ubisoft Reflections. Though it started as an experimental tool exploring procedural animation, the team saw a personality and charm in this little tool that inspired them to turn it into something more. “We created the opportunity for us to experiment on a smaller scale,” says Producer Pete Young. “We had some very challenging restraints and our ultimate goal was to create something new and completely different.”

For an in-depth look at Grow Home, check out this interview with Producer Pete Young.
