Starbreeze Studios unveils Overkill's The Walking Dead

Starbreeze, an independent creator, publisher and distributor of computer and video games, today unveils its new project, Overkill's The Walking Dead, based on the hugely popular The Walking Dead series created by Robert Kirkman.

Overkill – a Starbreeze Studio, will deliver a completely new co-op experience to The Walking Dead universe, exploring new characters and storylines.

“The collaboration between Starbreeze Studios and our partner Skybound Interactive will deliver something uniquely exciting for our millions of fans. We’re two independents joining forces to create the ultimate survival horror game. With Robert on the team, we will bring The Walking Dead into the world of first-person shooter co-op games.” says Bo Andersson Klint, CEO, Starbreeze AB. He continues, “It will be gameplay focused, ferocious and bring chaos to the traditional industry model – from us developers straight to you. This time it’s big – don’t walk alone.”

Overkill's The Walking Dead will be powered by Starbreeze’s Diesel engine updated for the next generation. The title is set to release in 2016.

Q: Why do you call Overkill's The Walking Dead an indie game?

A: For the first time ever Starbreeze Studios, one of Europe’s oldest independent developers, is both developer and publisher of a game. Starbreeze Studios is a relatively small developer studio consisting of 45 Starbreeze and Overkill game developers. Thanks to our success with the PayDay franchise along with our partnership with Skybound Interactive – the owners of The Walking Dead – we are able to cut out the middleman and have a direct relationship to our community, focusing on making the best game we possibly can together.

A: PayDay 2 and Overkill's The Walking Dead are two separate games – but, in true Overkill spirit, we’ll make some unprecedented crossovers. When Washington falls, what will Dallas do? If you own PayDay 2, you can answer this question in Overkill's The Walking Dead.

Q: What’s the deal with the Lucille baseball bat in PayDay 2?

A: To commemorate the collaboration between the companies, an exclusive weapon, the “Lucille” baseball bat from The Walking Dead, will be offered to the PayDay 2 community for free to be used in-game in PayDay 2.

505 Games to publish Overkill’s The Walking Dead



Starbreeze selects 505 Games for console publishing of Overkill’s The Walking Dead

Starbreeze, one of Sweden’s leading independent game developers, today announced its console publishing agreement with Digital Bros owned subsidiary 505 Games. The agreement covers next-gen console adaptations of “Overkill’s The Walking Dead” for the lifetime of the product and gives Starbreeze a license fee of 10 MUSD.

Once on the market, Starbreeze is entitled to royalties of console sales from “Overkill’s The Walking Dead”. The collaboration will also support Starbreeze in its intended commercialization on other platforms and media.

“Overkill’s The Walking Dead”, based on the hugely popular The Walking Dead-series created by Robert Kirkman, is currently under development by Overkill – A Starbreeze Studio. The game will deliver a completely new co-op experience to The Walking Dead-universe, exploring new characters and storylines.

Overkill’s The Walking Dead has been delayed from its previously announced late 2017 release window to the second half of 2018, publisher Starbreeze and partner Skybound Entertainment announced.

The delay, according to Starbreeze CEO Bo Andersson Klint, is to allow the title reach its full potential and take the original vision of the game a step further.

Starbreeze will provide, for the first time, an inside look into the game’s development during its newly announced Starstream event on May 10. Overkill’s The Walking Dead is a co-op game based on The Walking Dead universe featuring new characters and storylines, as well as a “unique and dynamic” level system.

Starbreeze has confirmed a fall 2018 release window and debuted a new cinematic trailer for Overkill’s The Walking Dead introducing Aidan, the first of four playable characters fighting to stay alive in the upcoming cooperative first-person shooter.

Here is an overview of the game, via Starbreeze:

Inspired by the rich story universe of Robert Kirkman’s original graphic novels, Overkill’s The Walking Dead is a four-player co-op multiplayer FPS action game set in Washington, D.C., as an outbreak brings the dead back to life. In this test of strategy and endurance, players will band together with up to three friends on a variety of missions and raids, securing supplies and survivors to strengthen their base camp against the threat of both the dead and the living – by any means necessary.

Each playable character has their own special abilities, skill trees, squad roles, play styles and background stories. Now they all share a common objective where survival and teamwork is paramount. The action is close-up and intense: take out enemies carefully with silent melee attacks or go in guns blazing. You need to be able to improvise, as nothing is certain, and a horde of walkers is always around the corner.

Overkill’s The Walking Dead will be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC when it launches.
