Ys VIII for PS4 details ‘Domination Battles,’ gameplay
Falcom has released new information, screenshots, and gameplay of the PlayStation 4 version of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, detailing the new “Domination Battles” gameplay element.
Get the details below.
■ New System: “Domination Battles”
“Domination Battles” are a new battle mode implemented in the PlayStation 4 version of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana.
■ Domination Battles: Invade the Enemy Base with the Castaways
As you progress through the main story, you’ll have the chance to invade the bases where the beasts of the Isle of Seiren have built their nests.
At these times, the player can freely select a mission to take on a special battle known as a “Domination Battle.”
Domination Battle Flow
(1) You can place “bonfires” inside the circles within the area. Bonfires weaken enemies in the area surrounding the bonfire, allowing you to fight at an advantage.
(2) There are several giant “enemy nests” setup within the area. Attack and destroy the enemy nests to stop the outbreak of beasts in the area.
(3) Repeat steps one and two while expanding the area that you control.
(4) If you destroy all of the enemy nests or a certain amount of time passes, the area boss will appear. Defeat the boss to win the battle.
(5) When the battle ends, you’ll obtain various bonus items depending on your score.
Bonfires Have a Direct Effect on Destroying Enemy Nests
Enemy nests have extremely high HP, and a lot of time would be needed to destroy them with standard attacks, but if a bonfire is nearby, you can receive support from the castaways and thus destroy the enemy nests in short time.
Watch Out for Bonfire Destruction
Bonfires have a level of durability, and enemies in the vicinity of the bonfire will attack it in order to destroy it.
If a bonfire is destroyed, its affect of weakening surrounding enemies will disappear, and you won’t receive support from the castaways, putting you at a disadvantage in the fight.
Non-Stop Battles
In the PS Vita version’s “Counter-Attack Battles,” intermediate results displayed for each wave, and during the results display there were no attacks from enemies, but Domination Battles continue non-stop even during the intermediate results display.
Pay attention, because your bonfires can be destroyed and bosses may swoop down on you while you’re looking at the intermediate results!

Falcom has released new screenshots and details on two characters set to appear in the PlayStation 4 version of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana.
Io is a new character that appears for the first time in the PlayStation 4 version of the game, while Lastel is a character that previously appeared with a deep connection to Dana, the game’s second protagonist.
Get the information below.
Io (voiced by Aoi Yuuki, age unknown)
“Hehehe, I still haven’t played enough. I guess today I’ll follow that tomboy shrine maiden I keep hearing about.”
An innocent girl with light pink hair who appears before Dana.
Although she has a tidy appearance, she sometimes speaks with a shamelessly self-important tone, and sometimes causes trouble involving Dana.
She proposes to Dana, who has shown interest in the royal capital Etania’s underground cathedral, that they investigate the interior together, but…
Lastel (voiced by Kouhei Amasaki, age unknown)
“As the son of Doran, leader of the guards, I will see that I protect the maiden until the very end.”
An honest and diligent young guard of the royal capital Etania
He has admired his father Doran, the leader of the guards, since childhood, and trained as a guard alongside his father to one day become a guard that can be respected.
After he matured, he joined the royal capital military as a guard. Dreaming of working as Dana’s guard, he strives to carry out his duties, but a certain event moves Lastel’s destiny in an unexpected direction.

Falcom has released new screenshots and details on two new features added to Dana’s part of the game in the PlayStation 4 version of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana.
Get the information below.
Spirit Rescue
In the world of Dana’s parts of the game, there are “spirits” born by the power of nature. Those spirits can sometimes get caught in disorderly places.
By finding and rescuing spirits in various places, you can receive various benefits, including new styles such as Gratica and Luminous, style ability upgrades, and stat increases for Dana.
Underground Shrine
As a new dungeon added to Dana’s part of the game in the PlayStation 4 version, you will aim to clear a huge underground shrine using Dana’s Style Change abilities.
—Virtue is the Key to Clearing the Dungeon
By reaching the depths of the dungeon, a door will open allowing you to proceed to the next level, but there are some doors that won’t open if Dana hasn’t built up enough “virtue.”
You’ll be able to build up “virtue” by clearing various quests in Dana’s part of the game, as well as by rescuing spirits, allowing you to open the doors.
