Having the same problem as you, I would like to share my experiences with you in improving my English proficiency.
Listen, read, speak and write.
Listen - Listen to English songs. Read the lyrics as you listen to the songs so that you can practice pronunciation at the same time. Watch English dramas and movies in English subtitle and pay attention to the pronunciation.
Read - Read at the appropriate level. i.e.If you find that there are on average more than ten words per page in a book that you could not understand, then the book is not suitable to read at the moment. (I started with Enid Blyton series instead of novels because those reading materials are too difficult for me at first.)
Speak - try reading out loud while you are reading. (of course only do it when you are alone!!!)
Write - try to keep a diary in English to practice your writing skill.
Vocabulary - It is a bad habit to always rely on translating words to mandarin. I suggest you to use an English-English dictionary. Also, keep a vocabulary notebook to record vocabulary and review the notebook (especially new entries) every night before bed.
I would advise you not to take any English courses if you are a disciplined person.
