He takes over the captain's role and will play in midfield alongside Claude Makelele and Michael Ballack.

Shaun Wright-Phillips returns to the front three with Florent Malouda dropping to the bench. Ricardo Carvalho is in defence after suspension but John Mikel Obi, back from Africa, is only on the bench.

Liverpool select Peter Crouch and Dirk Kuyt in attack. Ryan Babel has recovered from a minor international injury to play wide on the left with Steven Gerrard expected to play on the right.

Chelsea are expected to line up in a 4-3-3 formation as follows:
