Killer Instinct Is a Fun Free to Play Xbox One Launch Game
Killer Instinct was always sort of dumb - the goofy Mortal Kombat knock-off with a skeleton, a dinosaur, and dudes named TJ Combo and Fulgore. In hindsight, Killer Instinct was kind of embarrassing. But we still connected to it. Who doesn’t want to see a ninja fist-fight a werewolf?
Killer Instinct on Xbox One is still really, really stupid. It’s also pretty awesome.
More Street Fighter IV than traditional Killer Instinct in speed and style, this reboot isn’t just looking at how it can bring Rare’s classic back to life, but how it can reinvigorate it. The 2D fighter has changed significantly since 1994, and developer Double Helix recognizes it.
Killer Instinct is fast on Xbox One, unrecognizably so. Aside from the presence of Sabrewulf and Jago, you might mistake this for an entirely new game. The bright colors, and thick, black outlines give the characters, who take up a healthy amount of on-screen real estate, a comic book-style shade. Their combos are quick and flow naturally.
The move sets are simple, the stylish and devastating Ultra Combos are easy to execute, and the Combo Breaker makes you feel like a badass. It’s basically just a parry with a fancy name, but Killer Instinct regards it so highly that it’s hard not to feel the surge of satisfaction every time you escape an onslaught of frightening kicks. Every big counter feels like an event, and it can totally change the flow of a fight when your opponent's left exposed after your escape.
Familiar, yes, but this is definitely Killer Instinct done differently, and arguably better.
Killer Instinct is a day-one digital-only release on Xbox One, and features - get this - one character. Jago is free to play on launch day. Everyone else - unspecified returning characters as well as original fighters - will cost money. Price is to-be-determined
Killer Instinct is going to be letting you crossplay across Steam, Xbox and Windows 10
KI Steam Cross-Play Testing
Hey Killer Instinct family, we hope you’re just as excited for the 3.9 release as we are!
When you download the latest Killer Instinct Content Update, if you haven’t done so already, you’ll undoubtedly notice something peculiar, so we wanted to give you a heads up at what’s to come before you spotted it in the wild.
Tucked away in this CU is a switch that will enable certain feature you’ve all been c[禁止售卖商品]ing for, and that feature is indeed cross-play!
Yes, this is your confirmation that Killer Instinct players on Xbox One or Windows 10 will be able to play cross-network with players on Steam, as well, and we’re super excited to be able to bring that feature to you when KI launches on Steam in the coming weeks.
There is one small caveat, though. We will be testing this feature, making sure all the kinks are worked out (as best as we can) in a live environment. What that means for you is that you will see the option for cross play in your menus, but then there will be times where that menu item is turned off, and seemingly missing. Never fear, that is simply us working on things in the background, and your experience will not be affected as we do our work.
This feature being turned on/off will have 0 impact on your ability to play KI in-network, or between Xbox & Windows 10 players. So please, play to your heart’s content while we do the dirty work in the background.
Take this as your official announcement that KI will indeed feature cross play. Of course, there are still a lot more features around the KI Steam offering to go over, so keep your eye on ultra-combo.com for more information as we get closer to launch.
Any questions? Feel free to drop them here, and we will do what we can to answer! That’s all for now. See you in the virtual arena.
Legend of Thunder Pack, Available Free to Killer Instinct Players Today
“We have a saying,” said Josiah Blackeagle Pinkham, Cultural Consultant for the Nez Percé (Nimiipuu) the first time we met. “You are who you take care of.”
That value of giving yourself for others, to ensure that your family, your friends, and your community, are living their best lives, reverberated through myself and the Killer Instinct Creative Designer Adam Isgreen as we sat in the Cultural Resource Center in Lapwai, Idaho amongst piles of Nez Percé clothing, headpieces, jewelry, tools, and weapons last May.
When we rebooted Killer Instinct in 2013 for the launch of the Xbox One, we knew Thunder needed to be more culturally representative, and the Nez Percés were our partners in making that happen. However, the rush of launching a game during a console release, plus the pressure of maintaining a nostalgic look that KI fans remembered, meant we weren’t able to get everything right.
Now, with three seasons under our belts and a community of fans that embraces our game for the chances we take, we knew it was time to make things right. It was time to take care of the Nez Percé community that took care of us.
On behalf of Xbox and the entire Killer Instinct team at Microsoft Studios and Iron Galaxy, I am pleased to announce that the Legend of Thunder costume is available, free, to all Killer Instinct players today. You must own the Thunder base character to access the costume – it’s the first time we’ve had a third costume for our characters, and it’s a special one.
The Legend of Thunder costume is 100% authentic to the Nez Percé warrior tradition – from the new metal axes to the buckskin & beaded pants – and you can check out all the details in Rukari’s blog post over at ultra-combo.com.
The work that we’ve done is more than just a costume in a video game – Josiah tells us it is a positive step in the way indigenous people are portrayed in entertainment and a way to empower a new generation in their community. And for the Killer Instinct team, it’s just a small way of saying qe’ciyéw’yew’ (“thank you”) for not only inspiring us artistically but for letting us borrow and portray the vibrant Nez Percé culture.
If you’ve been watching EVO (let’s be real, you have!) then you undoubtedly caught Adam and James on stage as they pulled back the curtain on the last character coming in Season 3: Eyedol.
It feels so good to finally say that name!
Eyedol will be available for Ultra & Supreme Edition owners starting on July 22nd. Combo Breaker owners will have their chance to check out Eyedol starting on July 29th!
If you haven’t yet, check out the trailer below, and we’ll catch you later this month.

Killer Instinct Adds General RAAM from Gears of War
Gears of War’s General RAAM Enlists for Killer Instinct: Season 3
Since its launch in 2013, Killer Instinct has become the most played fighting game on Xbox One, boasting over 2.5 million matches played between Xbox One and Windows 10 PC, and over 7 million (7 million!) dedicated fans.
The game’s third season launched in March, and – in addition to a complete visual overhaul of all 20 stages (including three completely new stages) – Killer Instinct: Season 3 features eight new fighters in its now-26-character roster, including returning favorites such as Kim Wu and Tusk, and new characters like the vampiric Mira and the Battletoads series’ iconic Rash. This week, we bring one more warrior to the ring: Gears of War’s General RAAM.
Brandishing his wickedly brutal blade, and wielding innate control of the carnivorous Kryll, General RAAM – military leader of the Locust Horde – is sure to strike fear into the heart of any opponent. Unleash heavy punishing attacks, brutal blade combos, and command Kryll swarms for offense or defense. Locust Queen Myrrah’s personal champion is sure to provide a challenge to all comers… and he’s free for all Killer Instinct players this week!
Killer Instinct: Season 3 is also available on Windows 10 PC, and is an Xbox Play Anywhere title. Xbox One owners can carry over their Xbox One content and purchases to Windows 10 PC, and vice versa, at no extra charge. Xbox One and Windows 10 PC owners are also able to access their saved games, and play each other across devices. In short, no matter where you are or what platform you prefer, Xbox Play Anywhere has you covered.
The moment you have been waiting for is here, and while I’ve got you, let’s talk a little more about KI’s future.
Apologies if my above sentence sounds more ominous than intended. Just wanted to take a little editorial break to go over this trailer, its lack of teaser, and what that means for KI going forward. Actually, give the trailer a watch, since we know that’s why you’re here.
Ok, now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s get to it.
First off – our next character is indeed still a secret, and will remain hidden until we blow the lid off off their reveal some time in the near future. When, exactly, is that happening? We’re sure some of you super-sleuths have already determined the next elephant-in-the-room-sized opportunity for KI to make some noise, but for everyone else we can only say “stay tuned.” Admittedly the news is going to be dry between this point now and the June character’s announcement.
When the time does come to show off June’s character, you will also notice that June’s trailer will not have a teaser either. That’s because July’s character is still a secret, too! These two characters, whoever they may be, will not be teased in any way, shape, or form. No blurry images. No early looks. Nothing until they are properly revealed.
That’s not to say that the next two months look absolutely devoid of any information at all. Shadow Lords is trucking along, and we have a lot to share with you on that front. Adam Isgreen, James Goddard, and myself have all been discussing how to deliver you the most information possible around that release. Hate to say it, but stay tuned a little longer and we will have a wealth of information to divulge.
Alright. That’ll do it. Check out the trailer. The second you’ve finished watching, run over to your Xbox, fire up KI, get the Gargos & 3.1.5 update – which just launched today as a matter of fact. Combo Breaker owners – Gargos invades June 3rd for you.
