纸牌圣经——The Expert at the Card Table

首先是看到D&D官方开始出售仿真的The Expert at the Card Table，价格是75美元，借此机会介绍这本神秘和传奇的纸牌圣经。

《The Expert at the Card Table》，最早于1902年出版，第一版在芝加哥发售，共是750本，书中主要记载了大量桌面上的手法（千术）和一些魔术效果。

然而，对于这本书，在纸牌圈子也是特别具有传奇色彩的。相信大多数的纸牌爱好者都有所耳闻，《The Expert at the Card Table》这本纸牌圣经如今依然被很多纸牌大师推崇，就算是100多年过去，依然有很多的魔术师会偶尔的提及当中的手法和魔术。而这本书最神秘的地方则在于它的作者：S.W. Erdnase，而S.W. Erdnase是作者的笔名，所以真实名字成为了现今最大的疑团。

上世纪20年代，有发行方说真实作者的名字是笔名的倒写：E.S.Andrews。

但是在魔术圈里最流行的说法来自于Martin Gardner提出的“拼字游戏”。当时，Martin Gardner说Milton Franklin Andrews是真实的名字，原因在于“S.W. Erdna”倒过来就是“Andrews”！反对这个说法的人则说是Milton Franklin Andrews的文笔无法写出The Expert at the Card Table这样好的作品，而且Milton Franklin Andrew这个老千的社会背景是非常糟糕的。而且Milton Franklin Andrews因为涉嫌谋杀他的女友Nulda还被警方调查，而他则是在1905年旧金山的一家旅馆内自杀，被警方宣告自杀的原因是当时他的房间是反锁的。

详细的回忆下吧：

1944年，Martin Gardner，他是一位魔术师、数学家和作家，也是纸牌大师Dai Vernon的好朋友，他找到了当时芝加哥的一位艺术家Marshall D. Smith，这位艺术家是The Expert at the Card Table书中手法绘图的画师，他还记得44年前当时他与作者的秘密会面的情景，由于了解Smith所说的和当时一位魔术师（也是老千）Edgar Pratt的信息，Gardner深信作者Erdnase是当时在美国东北部Hartford州的一名很厉害的老千：Milton Franklin Andrews。然而他却死得太早，不过，由于他的自杀，更进一步的证明了他就是真实的作者，因为在他死后，第一版的The Expert at the Card Table发行后就再也没有修订的版本出现了。

100年过去，到了现在，讨论Erdnase的热潮有增无减，出现了很多的书迷去追寻当年的疑团，像还在追寻真相的这些书迷，基本上都对Martin Gardner的“拼字游戏”有很大的疑惑，虽然感觉上似乎是对的。（纸牌大师Dai Vernon本身也并不赞成是Milton Franklin Andrews，他的儿子Derek Verner说这是因为一般来说，都不希望他的偶像是背景如次糟糕的人。）

魔术师Richard Hatch就是一个深度的Erdnase迷，他也常年去到当时芝加哥城的位置去调查，游走在铁路边沿，也发现了一些线索，他支持的观点是：Edwin Summer Andrews这个才是真名。

值得一提的是来自David Alexander的一个新的猜想，David Alexander和他的搭档Richard Kyle一直在研究这个疑团，Alexander不单是一位魔术师，他还是一位传记作家和摄影师，他成为了一个私家侦探，去研究Erdnase作者本身，还有从不同的角度去分析当时最流行的说法——拼字游戏。这又怎么说呢？Alexander想到了一位富裕的、受过良好教育的采矿工程师，当然也是作家，名字叫Wilbur Edgerton Sanders，这位工程师还是一大政坛家族的子孙，为什么他会觉得这样身份的一个人会是真的作者呢？这要说到书中记载的一个传奇手法——S.W. E. Shift。从这个文字游戏出发，他想到了S.W. E的倒叙，也就是W.E.Sanders了。不过他却没有接触到Wilbur Edgerton Sanders，所以不确定他是一位老千或者魔术师。而这个观点也被Martin Gardner嘲笑。

The Expert at the Card Table这本经典著作一直被不停的提及到，可以想象它的份量有多重，然而，David Ben这位《Dai Vernon传记》的作者，他觉得书中并不单单是简单的手法，里面一些警句也值得学习和思考，比如：

“To be suspected of a skill is a death blow to the professional,”

“Excessive vanity proves the undoing of many experts,”

“The resourceful professional failing to improve the method changes the moment.”

再比较下魔术师和老千对于这本书的看法，从加利福尼亚赌场的Ron Conley（一位扑克高手，也是赌场的千术顾问）得知：据他了解，很少很少的老千有读过这本书，是听过而已。所以，The Expert at the Card Table对于魔术师的影响远远大于老千。

然而对于魔术师来说，里面的手法却并不合适所有的人，因为我感觉难度上并不合适初学者，桌面上的技艺应该说很多都是很难的，second deal，center deal，bottom deal，cull，palming，这样的技术合适一个刚接触纸牌的人学习吗，其实书本中对于手法的描述还是存在一些隐晦的地方，这本书是值得去研究的，所以The Annotated Erdnase by Darwin Ortiz这本注释般的书才会由Darwin Ortiz在1991年发表出来。

如今，微型版本比较的多见，方便携带。这本书的内容也已经出现在了网络的很多地方，被不同的编辑出来，其中由Conjuring Arts Research Center发行的The Bible editon版本非常的不错。对于专门用于收藏的版本，Todd Karr’s Miracle Factory还专门发行了带有卷轴版本—— Erdnase Scroll，发行了50个限量版本，300美元的高价，不过也被马上买断了。
