definitely. it's a shame as we will not be able to cope with the rate of globalization. as you know english is known as the global language now and we use it to obtain information, to communicate with people from all over the country. i encounter so many problems cause i can't master speaking skills. teacher never get the meaning of my questions, almost all the times. is NOT a shame for a Chinese!
but quite ashame as we born in this generation..cause all around the world is using English..
like when you travel to other country we communicate with English, because English is an international language nowadays..
and also in college/university studies in English..need to speak English in presentation too

作者: 咪咪白白    时间: 2011-4-6 03:24 PM
I dont agree if we could not speak English is shameful.  I agree with Chris-86.  Chinese does not know their own language is a shame.  I have relatives brought up in Malay education and end up all speaks Malay and English at home.  When they faced their China customers, they could not handle it well.

I would say preferable to know both Chinese and English are the best.

cant speak well in Chinese is a shame for Chinese

cant speak well in English will be difficult to get job in big company

however, ENglish is easier than Chinese
I am very sure about tat because I am totally chinese-educated
after graudation from Foon Yew High School, I enrolled in Singapore University

at the begining i dare not to talk to those local students as they are english-educated,
their speaking will be much more better than us of coz

however, when i interned in a US company
i met a lot of foreigners
no choice, i got to force myself to speak english to them
speak english at work
just 2 months, i m able to master english speaking very well

in the past, before presentation
i will prepare the scripts and force myself to memorize
it takes a lot of time
now, i dun nid to do so
once you get the confidence, u will generally know how to speak english in front of others without fear

I think it's not a shame, but as English is an international language
thus, it's best to master it because we can use English to communicate with others not matter in which country.

can't speak well in english is not a shame of chinese...but we also nid to learn english bcoz it is international language and english is important when we interview in big company or work for foreign company.

I think so lah
In my opinion, if you can't speak English, you are a LOSER + PARIAH!
I really despise those national leaders who can't speak English and have to get a translator to communicate with other national leaders
作者: chisheng    时间: 2011-10-23 11:56 AM
English is such a common language, and malaysia failed to implement english language for core subject. in the end most malaysian will be kept in their own world, we might face the fact that singaporean might think that most of us can't speak english and look down on us.
In my opinion most indian can speak good english, but they did not neglect tamil and malay too. As a chinese we should learn how indian cope well with those learn.

This is an interesting topic to discuss with. Personally I think it is a shame up to a certain extent, but it's not absolutely.
Seriously, English is very important in this world. If we cannot speak English very well, we will be looked down by others especially the Westerners.
Due to the fact that English is the international language and is widely spoken, it is essential to know how to speak and use it in our daily lives.
作者: krison    时间: 2011-11-3 10:25 AM
It is never a shame for a Chinese not knowing English. It is only a shame for a Chinese not knowing Chinese!

English is not our Mother Tongue and therefore we should not be embarrassed for not knowing it.

However, for a person who is going to get a good job in the current economy, he or she must master English. Therefore, it is foolish that the Malaysian government has not improve the English programme in the state schools.
作者: 天義    时间: 2011-11-5 12:10 AM
i agree with the sentence " it is never a shame for a chinese cant speaking well in english but in chinese ."

however ... the second language we learn - english , is just for the world‘s demand ...

it is believed that the british will not feel shame too for being unable to  speak chinese
作者: Bella17    时间: 2011-11-21 10:07 PM
I dun think is a shame.
The fact is, in Malaysia, u have to learn English as a second language.
So, it is important for you at least master the command of English language.
作者: txiaoqian    时间: 2011-11-23 01:08 PM

English is very important no matter in study or working period... you can't speak well in English will make you hard to find a job... the world is such materialistic, everyone in the world is seeking for someone can speak well in English, write excellent in English. it's not a shame, if you feel shameful, then i encourage you go to make your English better from taking an English short course, speak out with other and so on..
I'm the one who been experienced the important of English during my studied period.. everyone around me were those we called 'banana' and ang mo lang(coz i was studying @UK).. I'm only the one who had Chinese- education from primary to secondary time.. can you imagine how hard for me to join them? but i tried extremely hard to learn English from them instead of feeling shameful in front of them... Speak with them is useful... it will make your English improve faster....
even though, my English still in the improvement stage...i'm still facing the grammar mistake.. but at lease i can speak fluently with  my friends. conclusion is learn from mistake ... nothing is shameful...

Its a shame if you are a chinese but u cannot speak chinese/mandarin.
作者: yangRI    时间: 2011-12-27 11:13 PM
Don't think it's much of a shame. As long as you're able to communicate and convey information, you'll get by. Of course, whether you're able to speak fluently or not depends on your upbringing and educational background. I've come across many instances where people feel ashamed that they're unable to converse well in spoken English. But many times I find myself respecting those who clearly aren't very fluent, but still have the courage to try. The point is not whether you can speak well and show off, rather, it's showing that you accept the fact that you have lots of room for improvement and your determination to try.
作者: Qwertyyy    时间: 2011-12-29 03:41 PM
I beg to differ, with the increasing economy crisis over at the western counterpart ( Euro - Greece/Italy and US Dollar trillion Debt) , the economy is shifting it's market towards the middle east and china, therefore (depending on which of your interest) working towards the east market is much more profitable since it's increasing. With that i conclude the question is it a shame if a chinese do not understand mandarin ?
( why ask ?) because as compared to the eastern ( PRC/Taiwanese) we do not speak as fluently as theirs whereas thats where most ( assumed)  of our ancestors are from.

I am not saying English aint important, to a certain context, yes it is (internationally used) but if we are berating ourself down to 'shameful' ( A disgrace) for a Chinese it would be us not bothering about Mandarin

To me it is not a shame. English is not the mother tongue of mandarin-speakers. But as long as you are able to make people understand what you are trying to tell, it should be good enough.
作者: 姚金玲    时间: 2012-5-13 10:43 PM
Certainly not. Imo, the english level of malaysian chinese is much better than the chinese in china. However, fluency in english does give u an advantage esp. in workplace. I wish the day when my english level is as fluent as english native speakers will come true real soon~

It's not a shame.
Yet, we should learn it well when we are young.
As we are getting older, we didn't really have the time to master it.
As a university graduate, I believe employers want us to speak English fluently and use it efficiently.

And if you're looking forward to work in a big company, English is essential.

I do feel ashamed when I first enter college 6 years ago, even worse, with my ah beng look..
so maybe you guys can start to imagine: a guy from Klang, and from Chinese school, never even went to Subang and now pursue further study at The One Academy, surrounding by those so called 'cooler' classmates from KL, you can imagine how low my self-esteem at that time..

all I can do is sticked with 2 international students where one of them from Philippine and another from Mongolia... it was real hard and yeah, I do feel ashamed as I can't really communicate with them, but day by day I've been forced to spoke english with my 2 international friends and then, I changed my outlook.. and soon, the class started to know my existence~

and now, I came back from 10 months staying at London for degree study, most of my friends are local English, but thanks to those that mocked on me before this~ might as well thanks to those that willing to talk to me before this, and thanks to all my UK mates.. I might not be an expert in English but at least, it is not a problem for me anymore
作者: flyfly_欣    时间: 2012-9-25 02:35 AM
well to me, it is not something to be ashamed of if the person is willing to buck up his/her english, nobody is perfect hehe, everybody learn from mistakes.
to me english is more like an important language as it is internationalized..to develop a decent proficiency in english is definitely a plus point right
on a side note, i think every race should also learn how to speak in their mother-tongues. i admit im a bad mandarin speaker =.= i can even misplace the words in simple chinese idioms. but hey, no worries, as long as we all learn
作者: angel23love    时间: 2012-9-30 10:46 PM

who said so? in the world one third of chinese success without even know how to communicate in english either written or spoken language, in this world english is nothing, if you have a business mind u can succeed easily, some of my friends that came from china their parents were either farmers or businessman, they succeed in their career but did not managed to capture any single knowledge that is why mana china students came over to either singapore or malaysia to further educate themselves as they do not want to fail their parents whom spend a huge sum of money to educate them in return they must return this favour to their parents by educating back them. for me personally it is a disgrace for me if i do not understand the importance of english as many civilians nowadays at least understand a sentence of english.
