Game Designer Hideo Kojima Opens New Studio: Kojima Productions
Kojima Productions announced today that it has officially opened its doors. Lead by award winning game designer, Hideo Kojima, the studio will begin focusing its efforts in developing products that will push the boundaries in innovation and ignite consumer interest worldwide.
From the moment we enter this world, we instinctively invent ways to have "fun," and share our inventions with those around us. We are not asked to do this, nor do we need reasons to create. It is simply who we are.
We find one another and compete with one another. We laugh together and cry together all while playing together. Our experiences bind us and liberate us. To share our most valuable experiences, we create stories, invent tools, and evolve the art of play. Play has been our ally since the dawn of civilization.
"Playing" is not simply a pastime, it is the primordial basis of imagination and creation. Truth be told, Homo Ludens (Those who Play) are simultaneously Homo Faber (Those who Create).
Even if the earth were stripped of life and reduced to a barren wasteland, our imagination and desire to create would survive - beyond survival, it would provide hope that flowers may one day bloom again. Through the invention of play, our new evolution awaits.
Kojima Productions - We are Homo Ludens. We are those who play.

Hideo Kojima, founder: “For the new start, we’re just starting right now with this new studio. First we have to find an office, put together the manpower. I’m thinking of looking for offices here in Tokyo. Something not-too-big, I’m thinking smaller-scale, not too many people, and focusing on game creation at first.
“So the concept for this new studio would be creating things with good quality, and keeping the quality we’ve had so far, or even pushing it higher, while doing big things that so far we couldn’t do. We’ll have more agility, we’ll be able to do things that are more edgy, preserving the quality we’ve had so far, while at the same time finding new challenges and exploring new areas.
“When it comes to the things we want to do, of course it will be on creating new franchises and new IP. That will be the initial focus.
“As far as how big I want it to be, I don’t want it to be too big. I want to focus on the agility of the studio, how efficiently we are able to do things. For the first time, I want to focus on one game, on one thing. And after that, if we can do it, maybe we’ll start to do more things. But for the time being, we’re focusing on one thing.”
Yoji Shinkawa, art director: “I’ll be in charge of creating the concept for the characters, concepts for the backgrounds, concepts for the mechs, their designs. Once that’s done, I’ll also overlook the whole art process. In that regard, it won’t change that much. I hope I can do my best the way I’ve been doing so far.
“One thing that’s different is I want to accept more challenges and do things as I wasn’t able to do before. I want to expand, on a personal level, the things I can do. We’ve been working on a franchise that is beloved and has recognizable characters. One of my big goals is, visually, as well as whatever characters we create, go beyond that, are more recognizable, are more beloved. That’s definitely one of the goals I have when it comes to the art side.
“We’ve been working on a franchise that is beloved and has recognizable characters. One of my big goals is, visually, with whatever characters we create, to go beyond that, to be more recognizable, more beloved. That’s definitely one of the goals I have when it comes to the art side.”
On the New Logo
Kojima: “I’ve always loved astronauts, and [the new Kojima Productions logo] is designed so it can be seen as a medieval knight or an astronaut’s helmet. The concept is, with new technology and a pioneer spirit, we want to bring you to a new realm – within the digital world, I mean – we want to travel together with you to a new realm to which no one has gone before.
“As for the skeleton, we’re homo sapiens – people of wisdom – but we’re also homo ludens – people who play – and the concept behind this logo is that: With new technology and a pioneer spirit, we’ll deliver play to a new world.”
On the Sony Partnership
Kojima: “With Sony PlayStation, they make their content globally. It’s thanks to Sony that I was able to make a splash in the global market. It’s been 10-plus years since then and the working relationship at Sony, the people at Sony, we gel well. People at Sony have been friendly with me, I work well with them. I got several offers from many different companies, but with Sony it came to a point where I know these people, we know each other well. I feel like this is an environment where I will be able to make something and be comfortable. And I believe that is the environment I need right now.
“We know each other, we understand each other, and based on this relationship, I think it’s a good point to create a new IP. That’s the reason I chose to work with Sony on this project.
“I want to create something that’s what people expect, but at the same time will have something new that people haven’t seen before. It will be a complete game.”
On the Game Engine
Kojima: “We could go either way. Whether it’s using an existing engine or making another engine. We’ll have to do some research before making a decision on that one.”
On the Japanese Market
Kojima: “I make games in Japan for a global market. As long as there’s a market out there in the world for making games, I’m not too focused on what’s happening in the domestic market in Japan.
“However, because I make games for all the world, I want to make games that go to a global market. If there are very fun games are out there, I believe they will eventually find their way to Japan. People in Japan will start consuming them.”
On Working with Guillermo del Toro
Kojima: “Mr. Del Toro is a talented person and a very good friend of mine. Every now and then we talk about working together in the future, but I cannot make that guarantee here. But I definitely want to work with him in the future. I have no idea what I’ll be working on with him, if it’ll be a game, a movie, anime, but someday I definitely want to create something with him.”
On Looking Ahead
Shinkawa: “I’m getting the opportunity to create a new game again with Mr. Kojima. I’m really excited for this. One thing that happened through this period, the voice of the fans, the people who expected a lot, they gave me courage. They made me feel really well. I felt really gratified having worked so hard in creating games and doing the art I create. I want to correspond to the fans, to get back to them, and I think working again with Mr. Kojima is a great way to do this.”
Kojima: “I’ve been in this industry for 30 years. I turned 52 this year. I’m getting to a new start, and I am very confident. I’ll keep creating games until the day I die. Rest assured I’m making more games, something more fun, something you haven’t seen, and it would be great if I could count on the fans to support me in this.”
Hideo Kojima Inducted into the AIAS Hall of Fame at the 19th D.I.C.E. Awards Ceremony
The Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences is thrilled to induct Hideo Kojima, world-renowned game creator and auteur, as the 21st member to its Hall of Fame. Kojima is recognized for the best-selling Metal Gear series, widely considered the father of the stealth game genre, and credited with innovating story-telling and cinematic presentation in video games at large. The Metal Gear Solid series has received numerous D.I.C.E. Awards nominations throughout the years.
The 2015 Hall of Fame Award will be presented to Kojima during the 19th D.I.C.E. Awards ceremony on Thursday, February 18, 2016, at the Mandalay Convention Center in Las Vegas by film director, screenwriter, producer and novelist Guillermo del Toro.
“Hideo Kojima’s career-defining works have shaped much of how the video game industry approaches cinematic storytelling and player engagement,” said Martin Rae, president, Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences. “As one of the most well-loved and well-respected designers of our time, it is a great honor for the Academy to induct him into our Hall of Fame. Hideo is a game creator whose eyes have always looked towards the future, and we look forward to his thoughts on the D.I.C.E. Summit stage.”
Kojima began his career in videogames in 1986 as a designer and planner for Konami’s MSX home computer division. He set the trend for stealth action games with Metal Gear and pushed the boundaries of video game storytelling, cinematic cut scenes, and mature content with Snatcher. In 1990, Kojima was involved in Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, which gave the player more abilities, such as crouching, crawling, distracting guards, and using radar –all further developing the stealth game genre. With the release of Metal Gear Solid for the PlayStation in 1998, Kojima became a video game living legend internationally. The game was the first in the series to port a cinematic feel through 3D graphics and voice acting.
Kojima went on to create several sequels that continue to amaze players today, including: Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty; the 2004 remake for the Game Cube, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes; Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater for the Playstation 2; then Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. He also served as producer for Metal Gear Solid: Rising, and as a writer, director and producer of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. At the 2013 Game Developers Conference, Kojima announced that Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain would be his final Metal Gear work.
Among the numerous career accolades, in 2002 Kojima was chosen as one of Newsweek magazine’s ten most influential people in its special “Who’s Next” cover story, and received the “Lifetime Achievement Award” at the “Game Developers Choice Awards” in 2009. In April 2011, he became Vice President of Konami Digital Entertainment, and unveiled an innovative gaming technology, “transfarring,” which allowed gamers to transfer their gaming data from the PS3 to PSP and, therefore, letting gamers bring their game anywhere.
The AIAS Hall of Fame honor is bestowed on game creators who have been instrumental in the development of highly influential games and moving a particular genre forward. These individuals demonstrate the highest level of creativity and innovation, resulting in significant product influence on a scale that expands the scope of the industry. Past AIAS Hall of Fame recipients include: Leslie Benzies (2014), Dan and Sam Houser (2014), Tim Sweeney (2012), Dr. Greg Zeschuk (2011), and Dr. Ray Muzyka (2011). Additional Hall of Fame honorees can be found at interactive.org/special_awards.

Hideo Kojima teases new 'HideoTube' program
在《A Grand Day Out》成功后,Nick Park 得到梦工厂的资助,为其制作一部大电影。
Kojima Productions has released a new image of its mascot, Ludens.
The company sent the image to GameSpot earlier today. It contains the catchphrase “I’ll keep coming,” and partially reveals the face of a person.
Kojima Productions declined to comment on the content of the new image when asked for further details, stating, “You can freely imagine whatever you see.”
Ludens was first revealed in mid-May. At the time, Kojima Productions producer Kenichiro Imaizumi said, “It’s not a image of the game which we are working on.”

As with all of his past masterpieces, the latest title will be produced, written, directed and designed by Hideo Kojima himself. The lead character will be played by Norman Reedus.

Death Stranding is in development for PlayStation 4.
Death Stranding runs on the Horizon: Zero Dawn engine
Kojima Productions boss Hideo Kojima revealed during a panel at PlayStation Experience 2016 that the engine behind his upcoming PlayStation 4 title Death Stranding is that of Guerrilla Games’ Horizon: Zero Dawn.
Kojima went on a tour across Sony’s studios earlier this year in search of an engine for his new game and ultimately settled on Guerrilla’s. The engine is called Decima and is used to power all of Guerrilla’s games, including Horizon: Zero Dawn. According to Guerrilla Games studio head Hermen Hulst, the engine has taken a “quantum leap” forward in the past few years to get ready for this project.
Also discussed during the panel, Kojima said there will be female characters in the game, but he isn’t prepared to reveal them yet. He also said that the character played by Mads Mikkelsen is the antagonist. A limited edition vinyl featuring the music from the E3 2016 trailer and the track in a special version of the second trailer shown during the panel is also planned for release.
IGN spoke to Kojima Productions boss and Death Stranding director Hideo Kojima following the reveal of the game’s latest trailer last week.
Here are all the interesting tidbits:
“One of the themes of this game is life and death,” Kojima said. “So I want people to realize that when they die in the game, that isn’t the end.”
Partway through the latest trailer, Sam (played by Norman Reedus) watches as an explosion engulfs a giant. From there, he awakens in a world submerged in water. According to Kojima, this is where players are transported each time they die. It can be freely explored in first-person, because of a “unique” ability possessed by Sam, which enables him to wander outside of his body and recover items, among other things. “At that point, you’re not dead or alive,” Kojima said. “It’s the equivalent of that screen that says ‘Continue?’ and a counter ticking down towards zero.”
When you are ready to return to the world of the living, you can get back in your body. But rather than set you back to a point before you die, you are transported back to the world after your death, where your actions maintain an aura of persistence. “So as you saw in the trailer, you saw the crater, and when you come back, it’s still there,” Kojima said. Most games would’ve taken you back to before the crater was made. So depending on the player, you might have a lot of craters all over the place — depends on each player.” He added, “Death will never pull you out of the game.”
The latest trailer featured rain that seemed to have to ability to manipulate time. It makes plants grow the second a droplet hits, and the human body age and deteriorate within seconds. This rain, which is not of this world, is called “Timefall, and is a central part of the game’s lore. Kojima teased, “Most people in the game are aware of the rain — and well, [Sam] is quite unique in this regard… I think I should stop there. I’m spilling the beans.” Kojima added that the recurring motif of Sam crying is “really only because he’s sad right now.”
The baby that washed upon the shore in the first trailer, transported into a tube in the second trailer, and appeared inside Sam’s esophagus in the third trailer was one and the same. “The baby relates to game mechanics as well as the story as a whole,” Kojima said.
The mounted robot arms attached to Sam and the other characters has a name, but Kojima would not share it. It seemed that they sparked to life whenever that person came into possession of the baby.
Regarding multiplayer, Kojima said, That’s also one big part of the game I can’t talk too much about, but I definitely want to try something different for online.” He did hint that it will be primarily a single-player game, however, adding, “I think there are a lot of people out there who still enjoy single-player games, aside from some microtransactions.”
Regarding whether the word “Porter” on Sam’s uniform is his last name or job, Kojima said, “There’s some truth to it, and there’s some part that isn’t necessarily true to it.”
The latest trailer occur shortly after the game’s prologue and is the earliest section of the game we have seen so far.
The SAG-AFTRA strike of 2017 delayed performance capture and voice-over work. Kojima explained, “I also had a hard time because I had Norman and Mads texting me asking what we were doing and I’d say ‘There’s a strike, there’s nothing I can do about it!’” With the strike having ended, full performance capture resumed last week.
“I’ve been reading a lot on the internet of people saying I’ve spent the last year just traveling around and having fun,” Kojima said.” A lot of people saying I’m wasting time and money. But that couldn’t be further from the truth.” He added, “We’re waiting for the right moment to show gameplay, but right now we’re on track with the project.”
Regarding development in 2017, Kojima said, “Over this past year, we’ve been working on Decima [the game engine]. There are things we don’t know, we ask them [engine creators Guerrilla Games], we make some requests. On our end, of course, we use the Decima engine very differently from the way they use it, especially when it comes to the cutscenes. So we make our own things there, and send it to them, show it to them, get their feedback. We are at that pace, currently.”
Regarding extreme reactions from fans upset at the long wait between new information reveals, Kojima said, “There’s been a lot of stuff going on through this time, so it makes me pretty sad when people say ‘Oh, you’re just having fun and joking around and wasting money.’ You could ask so many people, but I really think that I’m doing this pretty fast. If you have a company, if you already have an engine, you already have the tools and the team together, and even then, it’s pretty standard for a AAA game to take three to five years to develop their games. For some games, it can take up to 10 years.”
If the trailers are still confusing, Kojima assures, “Everything makes sense. Everything will come together.”

Kojima Productions founder Hideo Kojima teased Death Stranding‘s upcoming appearance at E3 2018 in a tweet today with a new screenshot.
“+1 on the T-minus 3 weeks,” Kojima said in response to a similar tweet from Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann teasing The Last of Us Part II‘s appearance at the event. “#E3 2018 Decima x Kojima = DS.”
As previously announced, both Death Stranding and The Last of Us Part II will be a core focus for Sony Interactive Entertainment at E3 2018, alongside [粗俗词语过滤-#0003]er Punch Productions’ Ghost of Tsushima and Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Spider-Man.
Sony Interactive Entertainment and Kojima Productions debuted an eight-minute gameplay reveal trailer for Death Stranding during its E3 2018 press conference.
Here are the latest details on the game, via Kojima Productions founder Hideo Kojima on the PlayStation:
This latest E3 2018 trailer is the fourth for Death Stranding. The first teaser was released two years ago at E3 2016, with the second and third appearing at TGA 2016 and 2017.
Work on the first teaser started shortly after establishing Kojima Productions. At the time we were working out of a temporary office, recruiting was still ongoing, there wasn’t enough equipment to fit the bill and the game engine was still up in the air. We really had next to nothing. What we did have, however, was our bond (strand) with Norman Reedus, who immediately accepted the role as our main protagonist, and the idea of the game in my mind. Relying on just these two things, the teaser was created with my own hands in only two and a half months. I still remember the emotion I felt when, after two absent years, I was greeted by your warm welcome of cheers and the thunderous claps at the E3 reveal.
At TGA 2016, we revealed the appearances of Mads Mikkelsen and my dear friend Guillermo del Toro in the game, in addition to our decision to use the DECIMA engine, which we are developing with Guerrilla Games.
Then at TGA 2017, we showed you a cut scene from the early part of our game. As is the case for our latest trailer, all the scenes shown so far are directly from the game. This, of course, includes the scene where Sam (Norman) wakes naked on the beach surrounded by stranded whales, crabs and fish.
When we revealed the first teaser, I said that “the game has already begun – a game of unravelling the mysteries of what kind of game Death Stranding will become”. There are some answers to the questions I posed two years ago hidden in this trailer. These are for you, the fans who have shown your tremendous ability to imagine, search for clues and wrack your brains to solve the mysteries. But, the answers here are still only part of the mystery. Our game is still in play.
For this trailer, we’re showing quite a bit of gameplay (although the camera angle is altered in some spots). The first half and the last sequence in particular are most representative of the actual gameplay. There are some answers here too, as well as a chance to discover new mysteries. Some might have already picked up on this, but Sam is unlike any other hero you may have seen in games before. A typical hero is usually some sort of elite or someone with a military background. Sam is not. He is a working man of sorts — a hands-on professional. Someone with a skillset akin to a blue-collar worker. This is something you’ll intuitively understand once you play the game and control Sam. Herein lies our challenge, to create both a new form of gameplay and a hero that has never been done before.
We also finally revealed our heroines. Two goddesses, Lindsay Wagner and Léa Seydoux. As you know, Léa is a world class actress from France. I’ve seen many of her films, but the film that made me a fan was Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. I was sniped by her aura as the female assassin. And I’ve grown to like her even more through our work together. Her intelligence and knowledge, her elegance and beauty, she is without a doubt a true French treasure.
As for Lindsay, she holds a very special and irreplaceable place in my heart. She charmed the world with her role as Jaime Sommers in The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman. I was in my teens in the 70’s, and like viewers across the globe, I fell in love, and continue to be in love with her. She is a muse for all time.
Out of necessity for our game, we undertook the process of recreating Lindsay’s younger self from her recent 3D scan data. Of course, some team members are too young to have seen her films or shows when they originally aired, but when I showed them Two People, The Paper Chase, The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman for reference, the whole office fell in love. Her charm transcends time and generations.
There are other cast members who we have yet to be revealed, but to be able to announce the two heroines of our game makes me happier than I can say. All of the cast who have been revealed to date, including Norman Reedus and Mads Mikkelsen, are people who I grew very fond of, and had a strong desire to work with. Having fallen for them, I pulled some strings (strands), and asked them to be in my game. I wasn’t motivated by marketing or sales, but simply driven by my creative inspiration. They’ve joined because they feel the same way, and as a result we’ve all grown closer, connected by our special bond.
Although it wasn’t my initial intention, we now have a cross-generational, international cast. Mads, who is from Denmark, is a Nordic treasure; Norman is one of the most recognized American actors today, Lea is a top French actress and Lindsay is a muse from the golden 20th century. Across countries, time and generations, we have come together to realize this vision. Coincidentally, this theme is strongly connected with that of the game, and is a theme I strive to realize as a game creator.
I want to deliver something for people around the world that transcends generations. I want all people to experience the entertainment medium of games, not only gamers, but fans of film, novels, comics, music and art. With the help of the bond (strand) we have with these four cast members (and those who we have yet to reveal), I believe that we will make this a reality.
A serendipitous bond (strand) formed between myself and Silent Poets, whose song is featured in the trailer. We had a number of performance capture sessions in Japan, and met some amazing people who were part of the catering staff. Not only was the food exceptional, their hospitality was outstanding. We, of course, requested their service many more times. One day, we found out that one of their members was a veteran musician. When we started talking, we learned that they were about to release an album for the first time in 12 years. When I listened to the sample they gave me, an image of Sam walking in the wilderness naturally popped into my head. It was the song Asylums for the Feeling from the album Dawn.
Low Roar, whose song was featured in our first teaser, were also a chance discovery I made in a CD shop in Iceland, where I immediately fell in love with their sound.
This game is being woven together through numerous strands and human connections, including strands with you: the fans. The picture that forms on this tapestry is already beautifully drawn in my mind, and is right now, being woven together with the utmost care. It is sure to form an image unlike any seen before. I hope that the strand with you will be a special one.

而林赛在《The Six Million Dollar Man》和《The Bionic Woman》中饰演 Jaime Sommers 的角色掳获了全世界的心。
The Paper Chase》、《The Six Million Dollar Man》和《The Bionic Woman》等电影,全部的人都爱上她了。 」
