Ratchet & Clank on PS4: Where Past and Future Meet
Hey everyone. We know Ratchet & Clank, Insomniac Games, and PlayStation fans have been waiting to get a glimpse of Ratchet & Clank for PS4. We’re excited to bring you that first look today — ahead of its playable debut on the showfloor of E3 next week.
In this trailer, you’ll see a few glimpses of footage from the film, and then your first-ever look at gameplay footage directly from the game coming exclusively to PS4 in Spring 2016. Check it out.
We knew early on that we didn’t want to just up-res Ratchet & Clank for PS2. We started out thinking of Ratchet & Clank on PS4 as a “re-imagining” of the 2002 original, revised to tie in with the deeper version of Ratchet’s origin story (as seen in the film). We envisioned a curated Ratchet & Clank experience that borrowed from the spirit of the classic PS2 games while infusing some of the best elements from the Ratchet & Clank Future games.
We ended up with a new game, with elements based on the original — but now with modern controls, several new planets, new and updated gameplay segments, all-new Clank gameplay, all new boss fights, new flight sequences, and more… all constructed to take advantage of the graphical prowess of PS4. Throw in James Arnold Taylor as Ratchet, and you have a new beginning.
The fresh start means we changed up the arsenal quite a bit as well. As always with Ratchet & Clank games, you battle your enemies with an out-of-this-world arsenal. In the PS4 version of Ratchet & Clank, the majority of the arsenal is made up of weapons that weren’t in the original game. That means both new weapons and fan-favorite tools of destruction from the Ratchet & Clank Future series will fill out Ratchet’s kit. From the brand new Pixelizer (which transforms enemies into explosive 8-bit pixels) to franchise favorites like the dance-party-inducing Groovitron and wise-cracking robotic bodyguard Mr. Zurkon, Ratchet & Clank’s arsenal has never been better.
When we were asked recently to come up for a special bonus for fans that support Ratchet & Clank on PS4 by pre-ordering it, we went back to the list of our favorite weapons that we hadn’t yet brought to the game. In the end, it was a no-brainer, and I’m ecstatic to say that when you pre-order the game, you’ll get access to one of my all-time favorite weapons from Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando... The Bouncer. The Bouncer launches a bomb that releases a plethora of tiny homing bombs that bounce towards targets. One of the most effective and spectacular Ratchet & Clank weapons ever.

Ratchet & Clank Launches for PS4 on April 12th, 2016
As many of you know, we’ve been working hard on finishing up Ratchet & Clank for PS4, which will coincide with the release of the major motion picture in theatres on April 29th, 2016.
We’re happy to announce today that your wait is even shorter for the game: Ratchet & Clank will launch on April 12th, 2016 for PS4.
While we originally envisioned this Ratchet & Clank as a reimagining of the PS2 original, it’s much more. It features modern controls, new planets, new and improved gameplay, all-new boss fights, and an updated arsenal. This Ratchet & Clank will remind longtime fans why they first fell in love with the franchise while inviting new players to experience one of PlayStation’s all-time classics as it’s never been seen before.
The section of the game we showed at PlayStation Experience today includes scenes from the film, as well as all-new gameplay from planet Veldin. You may have noticed that Captain Qwark is narrating the game. While the movie is one version of the events, the game gives you a different take, from everyone’s beloved leader of the Galactic Rangers, Copernicus L. Qwark.

Hey everyone. It seems incredible that we’re just three weeks away from the debut of two great PlayStation heroes on PS4. We’ve joked that Ratchet & Clank for PS4 is the game based on the film based on the game… and that’s actually pretty accurate!
The film and game are designed as complementary pieces. They tell the same origin story of Ratchet & Clank battling Chairman Drek, with the same major beats and character arcs. The film focuses a touch more on character development and the game is a bit more focused on the action that happens between the scenes. Our goal was to take advantage of what each medium does best.
But the game has a major departure from the film: the game is narrated by Captain Copernicus L. Qwark. So you get Qwark’s skewed self-serving version of events to set up a different way to experience the story. He gets all the big details right, but the little asides are all him. As you watch our new trailer for the game (And play it for yourself next month!) — you’ll have to ask yourself: can Qwark be trusted?
We’re hoping that when you fire up Ratchet & Clank you’ll feel the rush you felt the first time you played a Ratchet & Clank game. But we’re going beyond that nostalgia with a gorgeous Ratchet & Clank that holds up to modern standards and is a fitting debut for the franchise on PS4. We wanted to tell the ultimate version of Ratchet & Clank’s origin story, completely synced up with the feature film.
The game will be available on April 12th and the major motion picture from Gramercy Films follows shortly thereafter on April 29th. For fans of the series we also have a pretty sweet pre-order bonus. You’ll gain access to one of my favorite Ratchet & Clank weapons of all time, the Bouncer, if you pre-order the game on PlayStation Store or at a participating retailer by April 11th.

Ratchet & Clank for PS4 the fastest selling game in franchise history
Ratchet & Clank for PlayStation 4 is the fastest selling Ratchet & Clank game in the franchise’s history, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced.
Over at the PlayStation Blog, SIE senior producer Greg Phillips discusses a bit about how the Ratchet & Clank movie tie-in, which launched in theaters today, came to be. Read that below.
It started back in early 2013, the first test footage of what would become the Ratchet & Clank movie first began circulating the halls of Insomniac Games, eventually reaching myself and a number of others here at PlayStation. Even in its early form, it showed a tremendous amount of promise, and at that moment we all knew we might be sitting on something special.
The test footage was created by Rainmaker Films who, along with Blockade Entertainment, were keen to try and turn Ratchet & Clank into a theatrical feature. This test footage was their proof of concept — and it definitely opened some eyes.
The footage sparked conversation between Insomniac Games and me here at PlayStation about how cool it might be to have a game available when the movie came out. At the time we were finishing up the development of Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus (an epilogue to the beloved Future trilogy of games), so it was a conversation with an eye to what we could do to have a game ready for the launch of the film.
Fast forward to January 2014 and one completed scene of the film was done. It was a sequence that occurs about 5 minutes into the film, where Ratchet shows an elderly old man how he upgraded his space craft in ways only Ratchet could.
As soon as we all saw this scene, the movie went from “This has a lot of potential” to “Oh, wow, we’re gonna pull this off!” It was at that point discussions on the game picked up in earnest. The film was returning to the beginning to tell Ratchet’s origin story, and we decided we would do the same on the game side. The film was going to introduce Ratchet to an all new audience and our goal for the game was to try to do the same by celebrating everything that made previous Ratchet & Clank games great. After a short discussion, we realized we had the perfect way to unify the stories: by having the game narrated by the ever truthful, never would lie about a thing, Captain Qwark!
As the game and film continued to develop, it was great to see the collaboration between teams. Rainmaker would share early cuts of the film and a small group of people that included folks from Rainmaker, Insomniac Games, and myself would go over everything and suggest improvements. In fact, the room seen in this image is very similar to the room at Rainmaker where these meetings would happen.
To close, even back when all we had was the initial footage of Ratchet & Clank running through an early version of the Metropolis level in the original PS2 game, we knew we had the making of something great. Ratchet & Clank was one of the first projects I worked on in product development, and it will always hold a special place in my heart. Nearly 15 years later, we not only got to go back to that original experience and remake it for a new generation, but we also have the Ratchet & Clank theatrical film that brings these characters and world to film audiences everywhere.
