标题: 英文中的「绿」字
一如中文，许多英文颜色的字有象征意义，单是「green」一字，便有多重意思。

      大家都知道「green」和自然、环保有关。「Green Parties」即重环保议题的政党，如果说：「This politician has turned green」，意即这个政治人物变得关注环保了。

      中文以「眼紅」形容妒忌，英语卻用「眼绿」。莎剧《奧賽罗》就有這个用法。主人公奧賽罗误信隨从雅葛的谗言，以为妻子不忠。雅葛一边暗示奧賽罗的妻子和別人有染，一边假意劝导他，说：

      "O， beware， my lord， of jealousy；

      It is the green-ey'd monster， which doth mock；

      The meat it feeds on。”

      这几句话的大意是妒忌折磨人，就像绿眼怪物（猫）折磨其猎物。结果，奧賽罗真的中計，杀了妻子。现在人们仍用「green with jealousy」形容妒忌。

      「绿」字也解作稚嫩或不成熟。例如大学新生或入世未深者叫做「greenhorns」。莎剧《Antony and Cleopatra》中，Cleopatra表示后悔年轻时和凯撒大帝相恋，说：

      “My salad days when I was green in judgment, cold in blood。。。”

      「Green shoots」即嫩芽，用以比喻复苏的迹象，如：「Economists are poring over economic data every week to look for the green shoots of recovery。」

      「绿」字亦有现实的一面，美鈔叫「greenbacks」，我曾问一个在美國生活的人：

      “When you were living in California ，did you sense any discrimination because of the colour of your skin？”

      那人答道，對於加州人來说：

      “Money is green。 I don't care if you are black ，white or yellow。” 换言之即认钱不认人。
