The 4G92 displaces 1.6 L (1597 cc) and is available with either SOHC or DOHC or MIVEC DOHC versions. Power output can be as high as 172 hp (128kw), as found in the Mirage Cyborg-ZR. A Modular Displacement (MD) version of the 4G92 MIVEC was also produced – MD is Mitsubishi's cylinder deactivation system which helps improve fuel consumption.

The 1.8 L (1834 cc) 4G93 is also available in both SOHC and DOHC versions. Turbocharged variants are also produced. The 4G93 was the first modern gasoline direct injection engine on its introduction in August 1996, and Mitsubishi produced over a million GDI engines. The SOHC 4G93 provides 86 kW at 6000 rpm and redlines at 6500 rpm. The DOHC 4G93/4G93P has 103kw at 6000rpm and redline at 7600rpm

The 4G94 is a 2.0 L version built in Japan, used in the Mitsubishi Lancer. Bore is 81.5 mm and stroke is 95.8 mm, with a compression ratio of 9:5:1. Output is 120 hp (89 kW) at 5500 rpm with 130 ft·lbf (176 N·m) of torque at 4250 rpm. It has a cast iron engine block with MFI fuel injection and an aluminum SOHC cylinder head with forged steel connecting rods and four valves per cylinder.

4G61
The 4G61 displaces 1595 cc (82.3 x 75.0 mm bore/stroke). This engine was always DOHC 16-valve and used either Multi-point (MPFI) or Electronic Control (ECFI) fuel injection. A turbocharged version was also produced for the Mirage and Lancer. The 4G61 does not have balance shafts like the other 4G6x motors. Instead, it has different components, some of which can be used on the "Silent Shaft" engine.

The larger 1.8 L 4G62 was an SOHC 8-valve unit for longitudinal rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive use. With an 80.6 x 88.0 mm bore / stroke, it displaced 1795 cc.

4G63
The 4G63 was a 1997 cc version. (85mm Bore x 88 mm Stroke) SOHC and DOHC were produced. The DOHC version was introduced in 1987 in the Japanese market Galant VR-4 and came turbocharged or naturally aspirated. It is found in various models including the 1988-92 Galant VR-4 and the U.S. market 1990-1999 Eclipse, as well as the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution I-IX.

The SOHC version was used in Mitsubishi Galant models until 1993. It has 76 kW of output and 157 NM of torque at 4750 rpm.
Also the SOHC version is produced until the late 90s and early 2000 and it is used in Mitsubishi cars like the Montero and the 2.0L 2-door Pajero with an output of 101kw at 4700 rpm. Also the N33 and N83 Spacewagon(UK market) in single cam 16 valve format.

The Mitsubishi Eclipse, Eagle Talon and Plymouth Laser introduced the DOHC turbocharged intercooled version to the U.S. in 1989 through Diamond Star Motors, a joint venture between Mitsubishi Motors and the Chrysler Corporation. From 1990 to late April 1992 came beefier rods and the use of 6 bolts to secure the flywheel to the crankshaft; May 1992 to 2006 Evolution versions have lighter rods and use 7 bolts to secure the flywheel to the crankshaft. They are referred to as the "six bolt" and "seven bolt" engines, respectively.

Output for the 2003 Japanese/US Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is 271 hp (202 kW) at 6500 rpm with 273 ft·lbf (370 N·m) of torque at 3500 rpm. It has a cast iron engine block and aluminum DOHC cylinder head. It uses multi-point fuel injection, has 4 valves per cylinder, is turbocharged and intercooled and features forged steel connecting rods.
In the United Kingdom, a special Lancer Evolution, the FQ-400, produces 302.13 kW (405.2 hp), from a 4G63 engine. At 202.6 hp (151.3 kW) per liter, it has the highest specific output per liter of any production engine.

Its turbocharged variant, 4G63T (also sometimes referred to simply as the 4G63), has powered Mitsubishi vehicles in World Rally Championships for years in the Mitsubishi Galant VR-4, Lancer Evolution, Carisma GT and Lancer WRC04. It was the powerplant of the Lancer Evolution when Tommi Mäkinen won his four sequential WRC championships in his Lancer.

4G64
The longitudinal 4G64 is the second largest variant, at (2350 cc). Early models were 8-valve SOHC, but a later 16-valve SOHC and DOHC version was also produced. All used MPFI with an 86.5 mm bore and 100 mm stroke. The 4G64 was also available with gasoline direct injection. The version used in the Chrysler Sebring/Stratus coupes produced 152 hp (110 kW) at 5500 rpm with 162 ft·lbf (214 N·m) of torque at 4000 rpm. The Chrysler version features fracture-split forged powder metal connecting rods. The 4G64 is an interference motor like the 4G63, however, the early 8-valve 4G64 is a non interference engine.

4G69
The 4G69 is a 2378 cc version built in Shiga, Japan. Bore is 87 mm and stroke is 100 mm. Output is 162 hp (119 kW) at 5750 rpm (160 in the Sportback Wagon) with 162 ft·lbf (219 N·m) of torque at 4000 rpm. It has a cast iron engine block and aluminum SOHC cylinder heads. It uses multi-point fuel injection, has 4 valves per cylinder with roller followers and features forged steel connecting rods, a one-piece cast camshaft, and a cast aluminum intake manifold. The 4G69 incorporates Mitsubishi's MIVEC Variable Valve Timing technology. The 4G69 is an interference motor like the 4G63 and 4G64.

The SOHC 4G15 displaces 1.5 L (1468 cc) with a bore and stroke of 75.5 mm x 82.0mm. A version of the 4G15 was produced with gasoline multi port injection. It has approximately 92 hp (69 kW) on the 1993 Mirage model. A DOHC MIVEC turbo variant of the engine is also still in production to date (4G15T), serving in the Mitsubishi Colt series, offering 154 hp (115 kW) on the latest Colt Version-R (with exhaust enhancement).

RPM
每分钟转速，英文RPM，全写是Revolution(s) Per Minute，是转动性物体在转动速度上的一种衡量单位，所指的是一个物体在一分钟内的旋转圈数，一圈即是指一次的绕周转动，若以西方数学上的角度单位来衡量即是转动了360度。
经常用RPM来做为转速单位的有马达、引擎、碟机（如：光驱、硬盘等），倘若某一马达的说明书显示它具有3,600RPM的转速，表示该马达每分钟可以转3,600圈，也就是每秒钟约转60圈。此外若引擎的说明书写着转速上限为4,500RPM，如此一旦使引擎转速突破此上限，就会被称为“超转”，超转具有危险性，轻则引擎温度升高、损坏引擎，重则与引擎关连的相关系统都一并故障，甚至可能危害到相关人员（如汽车引擎超转，有可能危及驾驶与乘客）。

值得注意的是，RPM以分钟作为时间基准单位，但近年来精密型转动、精密型转速的马达愈来愈多，以分钟为单位是早期技术尚不够进步，每秒转动的圈数尚不稳定时（如：这一秒转590圈，下一秒转611圈），因此才以分钟为量测基准单位，如今逐渐的也开始有以每秒为单位的需要，特别是有精密控制旋转圈数需求的马达上。

单位转换
- RPM 的直接意思对换为 rpm 、 RPM 或 rev/min （转圈每分钟）等
-“rev”不是正式单位，故又会略为 min-1 （每分钟）
-SI 单位为 rad s-1 （弧度每秒）
-1 rev/min = 2π rad / 60 s = 0.1047... rad s-1

kw
瓦特（符号：W）是国际单位制的功率单位。瓦特的定义是1焦耳/秒（1 J/s），即每秒钟转换，使用或耗散的（以焦耳为量度的）能量的速率。在电学单位制中，是1伏特·安培（1 V·A）。日常生活中更常用千瓦作为单位，1千瓦=1000瓦特，又可写作为“瓩”。

瓦特由对蒸汽机发展做出重大贡献的英国科学家詹姆斯·瓦特的名字命名。这一单位名称首先在1889年被英国科学促进协会（the British Association for the Advancement of Science）第2次会议采用。1960年，国际计量大会（Conférence Générale des Poids et Mesures）第11次会议采用瓦特为国际单位制中功率的单位。

马力horsepower（hp）
马力（简称匹；英语：horsepower，hp）是一个古老的功率单位。现时除了汽车工业提及内燃机的功率、空调的制冷效能以外，平时已甚少机会使用马力这个单位，而会使用标准的国际功率单位瓦特。

DOHC
顶置凸轮轴（英文：Overhead camshaft，简称OHC）是一种现今流行的汽车发动机气门机构。在这种结构中，凸轮轴被放置在汽缸盖内，燃烧室之上，直接驱动摇臂、气门，不必通过较长的推杆。与气门数相同的推杆式发动机（即顶置气门结构）相比，顶置凸轮轴结构中需要往复运动的部件要少得多，因此大大简化了配气结构，显著减轻了发动机重量，同时也提高了传动效率、降低了工作噪音。

尽管顶置凸轮轴使发动机的结构更加复杂，但是它带来的更出色的引擎综合表现（特别是平顺性的显著提高）以及更紧凑的发动机结构，使发动机制造商很快在产品中将广泛应用这一设计。顶置凸轮轴与顶置气门结构的驱动方式并不一定不同。动力可以通过正时皮带、链条甚至齿轮组传递到顶置的凸轮轴上。
此外，顶置凸轮轴结构也使采用这一设计的发动机达到比采用顶置气门结构或整体式凸轮轴结构的发动机更高的转速。
如今，许多顶置凸轮轴发动机都采用了多气门结构或可变气门正时结构以提升发动机的工作效率和动力表现。
通常按照配气结构内包含的凸轮轴数目，顶置凸轮轴可分为以下两种形式：

单顶置凸轮轴（Single overhead camshaft, SOHC）

单顶置凸轮轴（SOHC）
单顶置凸轮轴是一种在汽缸盖内只设置一条凸轮轴的设计。采用这一设计的直列汽缸发动机只需一条安放在汽缸盖上方的凸轮轴，而V形汽缸发动机则需要两条凸轮轴，分别安放在一侧汽缸组之上。

单顶置凸轮轴设计中，需要往复运动的部件及其总质量较同等条件下的推杆式发动机显著减少。因此单顶置凸轮轴能提高发动机转速，从而在输出扭矩相同的情况下提高发动机的功率输出。在这一设计中，凸轮轴能够直接或通过摇臂控制气门开闭，而不需像顶置气门的推杆式发动机一样，需要通过挺杆、较长的推杆以及摇臂将发动机组内凸轮轴上凸轮的运动传递到汽缸盖内的气门上。

相比于推杆式结构，单顶置凸轮轴设计能使发动机结构（主要是配气结构）更加紧凑。这一优势在同时采用多气门设计（即一个汽缸有两个以上的气门）时特别显著。不过有时为了适应发动机设计的特定要求，在使用单顶置凸轮轴设计的同时也需要采用一些附加部件。希尔曼顽童（Hillman Imp）的4缸8气门发动机便是采用气门间隙调节垫片及活塞阀进行调节的单顶置凸轮轴发动机的典型。希尔曼顽童是一款1960年代初设计制造的小型双门轿车。其后置合金发动机是由考文垂顶点（Coventry Climax）系列赛车发动机改进而来的。在这台发动机中，进气与排气气门被安放在发动机体的同一侧，因而无需采用交叉气流汽缸盖（crossflow cylinder head）的设计，同时有利于火花塞的工作。

不过单顶置凸轮轴也有其缺点。由于进气门和排气门在进气道中位置不同，气门开闭时间的精确性会受到一定影响。
在1980年代早期，丰田（Toyota）和大众汽车（Volkswagen）也曾在单顶置凸轮轴的每缸两气门发动机中使用过直接驱动、平行气门的结构以使体积进一步紧凑。

丰田采用的是液压挺杆，而大众汽车采用的是桶状挺杆，同时还配备了气门间隙调节垫片以精确控制气门开闭时间。在单顶置凸轮轴发动机的所有气门排列形式中，这种设计可能是最为紧凑和简单的。

双顶置凸轮轴（DOHC）
双顶置凸轮轴（dual overhead camshaft, DOHC，又称double overhead cam, dual overhead cam），或简称“双凸轮轴”（twin cam）是一种在汽缸盖内配备两条凸轮轴的气门排列形式。两条凸轮轴分别控制进气门和排气门。根据引擎的构造不同（主要是汽缸排列形式的不同），一台一般的双顶置凸轮轴汽车发动机可最多拥有两条到四条不等的凸轮轴。

双顶置凸轮轴结构的发动机并不一定有两个以上的进气门和排气门，但是如果多气门发动机的气门需要被直接驱动（虽然一般都通过挺杆驱动），那么双顶置凸轮轴是必不可少的。并非所有的双顶置凸轮轴都是多气门的——在多气门技术普及之前，两气门发动机上也经常配备两条凸轮轴。不过在当今，双顶置凸轮轴已经与多气门技术划上了等号，因为在几乎所有的双顶置凸轮轴发动机中，每个汽缸都有三个到五个气门。

历史
最早一批采用双顶置凸轮轴设计的发动机分别是由菲亚特（Fiat，于1912年）、标致（Peugeot）大奖赛（于1913年）、阿尔法·罗密欧（Alfa Romeo）大奖赛（于1914年）设计制造的。其中后两者还采用了每缸四气门的设计。在后来的阿尔法·罗密欧6C（1925年）、玛莎拉蒂蒂波26（Maserati Tipo 26，1926年）、布加迪51型（Bugatti Type 51，1931年）以及早期的奥迪（Audi）等车上也采用了这一技术。此外，早期采用每缸两气门技术的法拉利（Ferrari）大多使用了双顶置凸轮轴。

可变气门正时(Variable valve timing)

可变气门正时，或 VVT，是一种用于汽车活塞式发动机中的技术。VVT技术可以调节发动机进气排气系统的升程、重叠时间与正时（其中一部分或者全部）。

活塞式发动机通常通过提升阀来进气与排气。提升阀直接或间接地被凸轮轴上的凸轮驱动。在每个进气排气循环中凸轮驱动气门打开（升程）一定时间（重叠时间）。

气门打开和关闭的正时也十分重要。曲轴通过正时皮带，齿轮或链条来驱动凸轮轴。
凸轮轴上凸轮的轮廓与位置通常是为特定的发动机转速而优化的，通常这会降低发动机在低转速情况下的扭矩和高转速情况下的功率。VVT技术能够使其根据发动机工况进行改变，提高了发动机的效率与动力。

在高转速下，发动机需要更多的空气。但是，进气气门可能在所需空气完全进入前关闭，降低了性能。
另一方面，如果凸轮持续令气门打开较长时间，像赛车中的情况，在较低转速下便会出现问题。持续打开的气门会导致燃料未经燃烧便排出发动机。这样会降低发动机的性能并增加污染。所以，比赛用发动机怠速不能过低；而民用车中2000 rpm左右的怠速是不常见的。

环境与燃油经济性法规的压力使车商选用VVT技术作为解决方案。简单的VVT系统可以提前或延后进气排气气门的正时。其他的像本田的VTEC技术可在不同发动机转速下在两组凸轮中切换。更先进的技术例如本田的I-VTEC技术可以持续的改变气门的升程与正时。

凸轮轴
凸轮轴是活塞发动机里的一个部件。它的作用是控制气门的开启和闭合动作。虽然在四冲程发动机里凸轮轴的转速是曲轴的一半（在二冲程发动机中凸轮轴的转速与曲轴相同），不过通常它的转速依然很高，而且需要承受很大的扭矩，因此设计中对凸轮轴在强度和支撑方面的要求很高，其材质一般是特种铸铁，偶尔也有采用锻件的。由于气门运动规律关系到一台发动机的动力和运转特性，因此凸轮轴设计在发动机的设计过程中占据着十分重要的地位。

构造
凸轮轴的主体是一根与汽缸组长度相同的圆柱形棒体。上面套有若干个凸轮，用于驱动气门。凸轮轴的一端是轴承支撑点，另一端与驱动轮相连接。
凸轮的侧面呈鸡蛋形。其设计的目的在于保证汽缸充分的进气和排气，具体来说就是在尽可能短的时间内完成气门的开、闭动作。另外考虑到发动机的耐久性和运转的平顺性，气门也不能因开闭动作中的加减速过程产生过多过大的冲击，否则就会造成气门的严重磨损、噪声增加或是其它严重后果。因此，凸轮和发动机的功率、扭矩输出以及运转的平顺性有很直接的关系。
一般来说直列式发动机中，一个凸轮都对应一个气门，V型发动机或水平对置式发动机则是每两个气门共用一个凸轮。而转子发动机和无阀配气发动机由于其特殊的结构，并不需要凸轮。

在以前很长的一段时间里，底置式凸轮轴在内燃机中最为常见。通常这样的发动机中，气门位于发动机的顶部，即所谓的OHV（OverHead Valve，顶置气门）式发动机。此时通常凸轮轴位于曲轴箱的侧面，通过配气机构（如挺杆、推杆、摇臂等）对气门进行控制。因此底置式凸轮轴一般也叫侧置式凸轮轴。由于在这样的发动机中凸轮轴距离气门较远，而且每个气缸通常只有两个气门，因此转速通常较慢，平顺性不佳，输出功率也比较低。不过这种结构的发动机输出扭矩和低速性能比较出色，结构也比较简单，易于维修。
现在大多数量产车的发动机配备的是顶置式凸轮轴。顶置式凸轮轴结构使凸轮轴更加接近气门，减少了底置式凸轮轴由于凸轮轴和气门之间较大的距离而造成的往返动能的浪费。顶置式凸轮轴的发动机由于气门开闭动作比较迅速，因而转速更高，运行的平稳度也比较好。较早出现的顶置式凸轮轴结构的发动机是SOHC（Single OverHead Cam ，顶置单凸轮轴）式发动机。这种发动机在顶部只安装了一根凸轮轴，因此一般每个汽缸只有两到三个气门（进气一到两个，排气一个），高速性能受到了限制。而技术更新一些的则是DOHC式（Double OverHead Cam，顶置双凸轮轴）发动机，这种发动机由于配备了两根凸轮轴，每个汽缸可以安装四到五个气门（进气二到三个，排气二个），高速性能得到了显著的提升，不过与此同时低速性能会受到一定的影响，结构也会变得复杂，不易维修。

传动方式
底置式凸轮轴通常采用星形齿轮组（即所谓的“控制轮”），辊子链或齿条与曲轴相连。为了控制噪声，直径较大的凸轮轴端传动轮通常由塑料或者轻金属制造，而相对直径较小的曲轴端传动轮则大多采用钢材。
链条连接也比较多见。这种方式在底置式和顶置式凸轮轴上都可以看到。为了减小噪声（一般是链条在运动中产生的“振摆噪声”），通常还会附带一个液压压紧装置和塑料材质的导轨。
顶置式凸轮轴结构中比较多见的是用一个塑料齿条链连接。这个齿条链位于发动机机油腔外，附带有钢质的嵌入部件，通过一个可调的辊子帮助张紧。
还有一种结构由于动力在传输过程中损耗过大且过于复杂，现在已经比较少见。这种结构通过一个偏心连杆、星形齿轮组或带中间轴的锥形齿轮组来连接顶置式凸轮轴与曲轴。
